Hiwatari Matsuri /

EN - The Hiwatari matsuri (firewalk festival) is celebrated every second sunday of march at the bottom of the Mount Takao, in the city of Hachioji, Tokyo. We went with Max, our first guest, to see the unique event where in order and waiting in a endless line, you can walk on ember (but don't worry, there's a safe path that you can walk through without burning your feet), while the monks chant a mantra accompained by drums.

EN - There's a ritual to do. First of all you put your feel over a mountain of salt, and the monks gives you a soft tap in your back. Then you can star to walk through the path of ember. It's a short way, and maybe for the first persons that actually walk through real ember could be really tough, but after hundreds of treads the path is more than wet mud. At the end of the way, a monk gives you another tap and finally the most venerate monk blesses you with a touch in your shoulder with a golden tool.

EN - I heard comments from people that actually got some burns in their feet.

EN - At the end of the day, we were able to walk through, because the line was reduced considerably, and we were blessed too. All the bad things out!
